How to Keep Your Dog Safe During a Heatwave in Zurich?

And how we stay cool at Lami et Ses Amis

Summer in Zurich can get surprisingly hot — and while we humans can find a shady café or jump in the lake, dogs rely on us to keep them safe and comfortable. During a heatwave, it’s important to adjust routines and pay close attention to how your dog is feeling.

Here are a few simple tips to help your dog stay cool and happy, whether they’re with you — or staying with me.

1. Walk Early, Walk Late

Avoid the hottest hours (usually between 11:00 and 17:00). Sidewalks can get hot enough to burn paws, and even short walks can overheat some dogs.

What I do:
At Lami et Ses Amis, I do calm, private walks early in the morning or later in the evening. Midday? We stay in the shade or just chill inside.

2. Keep Water Everywhere

Hydration is key. Always bring water on walks and refresh the bowls several times a day.

What I do:
I keep water bowls in several spots inside the house and always bring a portable one on walks — most dogs learn quickly where “their” bowl is.

3. Stay Indoors — If It’s the Right Indoors

Not all indoor spaces are equal. Small apartments or top floors can turn into ovens during a heatwave.

Why my place helps:
My home is a converted loft inside an old factory in Zurich — the thick stone walls keep the temperature cool and stable, even during hot days. It’s naturally fresh, calm, and perfect for a dog nap.

4. No Crazy Playtime

Exercise is good, but intense play during heatwaves can quickly lead to heatstroke. Look out for heavy panting, drooling, or glassy eyes — these are red flags.

What I do instead:
Calm enrichment games, puzzle feeders, frozen treats — and lots of relaxing. This isn’t the time for high-energy fetch marathons.

5. Use Cooling Tricks

A damp towel to lie on, a frozen Kong, or just a shady corner with a breeze can work wonders.

Final Tip: Know Your Dog

Flat-nosed breeds, seniors, puppies, and dogs with thick fur are especially sensitive to heat. If you ever notice signs of discomfort, stop everything and cool them down gently.
